
Who can refuse this favourite traditional English pudding, popular with all the family.
1kg cooking apples, cored, peeled and sliced
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp mixed spice
110g-150g sugar
For the topping:
275g plain flour
110g brown sugar
2 tbsp dried milk powder
1-2 tsp ground cinnamon
150g butter
1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Cook the apples in a large saucepan with the spices and sugar for 5-7 minutes until slightly tender.
2. Spoon the apples into a lightly greased ovenproof dish.
3. Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl, add the sugar, milk powder and cinnamon, rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs; spoon over the apple, and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.
4. Serve the crumble with cream or custard.
Tip:
Add blackberries or blackcurrants to the apples for more great autumn puddings.
